“He/she who lives with untruth lives in spiritual slavery...freedom is still the bonus we receive for knowing the truth.”
--- DR. MARTÍN LUTHER KING, JR. (1929-1968)

EL CENTRO DE LA RAZA, or “The Center of the People,” came to life in 1972 when a group of students with a longing for a sense of community led a peaceful occupation of the abandoned Beacon Hill School.

OVER THREE DECADES LATER, El Centro de la Raza continues to provide culturally competent services, and to sponsor diverse initiatives for the betterment of our city, our nation and our world.

OUR MISSION is to achieve quality, justice, dignity and freedom for all people without regard to race, color, creed, sex or national origin. We seek to empower – through peaceful means and social change – those affected by poverty, militarism, racism, and sexism so that they may become self-reliant.

“We believe that only an expanded democracy—where all citizens have equal rights and
opportunities—will enable our country to realize its potential for greatness....”
--Roberto Maestas, Executive Director/Founder
