Our Luis Alfonso Velasquez Flores After School Program provides a 2-hour before school session from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and a 3-hour after school session from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday for up to 24 children ages 5 to 12 years who come from low-income families and who are in need of support with homework assistance, tutoring and mentoring. Parents are able to bring children to the before school session and return in the evening to pick-up their children. Children are transported to and from school by van, and participate in academic as well as cultural activities while here at El Centro de la Raza.
Our program also provides a summer session that runs from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Activities in which the children participate focus on learning in major areas of study, such as language and mathematics. There are also activities that include other areas of study, such as music lessons, arts and nature. All activities are age appropriate and enhance the areas in which the children need assistance the most.
Our staff provide support to parents by attending parent-teacher conferences and maintaining constant communication with parents about their child's academic progress. Staff utilize screened volunteers as tutors to ensure that children have equal access to supportive services.
