Cinco de Mayo Volunteers



Thank you for your interest in volunteering with El Centro de la Raza for our Cinco de Mayo celebration! Please look over the volunteer descriptions below and decide which area and times you would like to volunteer for. There will be an orientation for all volunteers prior to the event; dates for this will be announced shortly. Volunteer Group Líder

  • Must be 18+
  • Some Spanish and English required
  • Must attend at least 2 Cinco De Mayo meetings in April (every Friday @11)
  • Must be responsible, enthusiastic and flexible
  • Interview and background required for volunteers that have not previously volunteered with El Centro de la Raza

For each of the following areas below (except photography and Lunes llamadas) we will need at least one individual that is willing to take on a bit more responsibility. As a group líder you will be the one telling volunteers where to go and what to do. You will be the one to make sure people aren't just standing around. Volunter Group Líderes will need to attend orientation and be prepared to explain the logistics of your designated area.

Volunteer Registration

Lunes Llamadas

  • Every Monday from 4-6
  • Must be 16+
  • Spanish and English required

Come in on Lunes and call community members, organizations, businesses, and remind them about the event. You will ensure that everyone knows about what a wonderful event this is going to be. El Centro de la Raza will provide a script designed specifically for calling each group. Begins April 7th

Volunteer Registration

Publicity

  • Times are flexible
  • Some Spanish and English required
  • Must provide own transportation and have a valid drivers license
  • Must be 18+

Volunteers will help distribute and post flyers in businesses, restaurants, churches, schools and organizations. We need volunteers that are enthusiastic and excited about this event. This is a great way to practice your Spanish skills!

Fashion Show

  • Saturday May 3rd 1pm
  • 16+
  • Some Spanish/English a plus
  • Help our models get ready to show off their ropa tradcional! This will only last for 30 minutes but we would love for some fashionable people to help out and help make this run as smooth as possible.


    Set-up

    • Friday May 2nd 2pm-7pm
    • Saturday May 3rd 9pm-1pm
    • Saturday May 3rd 1pm-5pm
    • Should be able to lift and carry items such as tables and chairs
    • Must be 16+

    Volunteers will help with general festival set-up. The night before we will need help to transport decorations, food supplies, tables, chairs etc. from El Centro de la Raza to Jefferson Park community center. On the day of the event volunteers will arrange tables for vendors and informational booths, move chairs, help prepare the kitchen, put up decorations, set up with children’s activities and run last minute errands.

    Greeters

    • Saturday May 3rd 3pm-6pm
    • Saturday May 3rd 6pm-9pm
    • Spanish and English required
    • Must be 16+

    Volunteers will greet guests as they arrive, help with parking and direct guests to sign-in tables. This is a great volunteer job for people that like to work in fast-paced environments and enjoy meeting new people.

    Kitchen

    • Food handlers a plus
    • Some Spanish and English required
    • Must be 16+

    This is probably the most important part of this event, the food! El Centro de la Raza will be selling food (tacos, rice and beans, barbeque etc) and we will need lots of hands to help prepare, serve and clean up. We will also need two or three volunteers to be in charge of the money since El Centro de la Raza will be raising funds directly from the sales. If you love cooking or want to learn, come the night before the event to help our wonderful Latina chefs.

    Registration Table Coordinators

    Volunteers will encourage guests to sign in and record contact information. This information helps us for next year’s Cinco de Mayo as well as provides data for grant applications. This is a great position for someone that excels at multi-tasking and has high energy.

    Runners

    • Saturday May 3rd 3pm-6pm

    • Must be 18+
    • Must have drivers license and car
    • Spanish and English a plus

    As a runner you will be called on to make quick last minute errands. Volunteers will serve as a point person for each of the designated areas and will assist other volunteers. Runners may be asked to various things: drive to a grocery store, help with raffle tickets, move activities, answer questions, etc.

    Children Activities

    • Saturday May 3rd 3pm-6pm

    • Some Spanish/English required

    This is a job for enthusiastic people that love kids! Volunteers will get to do face painting and help kids make maracas and other crafts. You will be in charge of keeping the kiddies a) safe and under control and b) happy! Note: If you have not volunteered with El Centro de la Raza before, an interview and background check are required.

    Sound and Stage

    • Saturday May 3rd 3pm-6pm
    • Saturday May 3rd 6pm-9pm
    • Knowledge and experience with sound systems a plus

    Volunteers will help set up/manage sound and stage equipment prior to and during event. Moving microphones, adjusting sound, moving stage equipment, helping with lineup of performers and instructing performers.

    Clean-up

    • Must be willing to stay as late as 11pm

    Volunteers will help take down, pack and load banners, registration materials, and decorations after the event. We’ll need to clean up the kitchen and make sure we leave the place as it was before we celebrated.
